Upstarts 2010 week 2 – Road Safety Authority; “We Passed this way…”

Week two was held at IIBBDO in Sandymount, with a brief from the Road Safety Authority.   A slightly more relaxed evironment than week 1 with sweets and drinks on offer.

Over the last 10 years the RSA has helped make Irish roads significantly safer, with road deaths reduced by 41% since 2001. But one group of road users has proved continuously difficult to reach, with awful consequences – young male drivers.

The brief
Convince young men to drive with more care through any means neccessary.

My response
- Proposal 1
“We passed this way…”

I propose to bring the message to our target audience right when, and where they need it most… on the roads. Attach a face, name and empathy to the young victims of road accidents over the past 5 years and turn statistics into stories.

Print / Outdoor
I propose to put a poster of the face and name of every young victim in the exact area they lost their life. For example you might see at a petrol station or tunnel entrance…

…with the aim to make drivers aware and curious of the roads that they drive on…somebody lost their life here, why?

Guerilla
I propose to strengthen this campaign with guerilla marketing techniques again highlighting the places and frequency of deaths that have taken place on the roads.

- Proposal 2
“Have you seen our new speed cameras?!”
Results of a focus group determined that ‘speeding fines’ where the number one deterrent of careless driving, for that reason my second proposal is to invest half of the budget on the installation of additional fixed speeding cameras throughout problem areas in Ireland, with the other half of the budget invested in an outdoor and print advertising campaign ‘launching’ these new cameras.

Presenting these new cameras as if introducing a new state of the art Sony product will help relate to our target audience with a tongue-in-cheek yet serious tone.

Our aim is not to catch drivers out but to encourage them, through any means necessary, to drive with more care.

Upstarts 2010 week 1 – Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA)

The first week of Upstarts was held in Cawley Nea in Rathmines with a brief to promote an upcoming exbition entitled ‘The Moderns’ at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. This was the first and only ‘live’ brief, which meant that one of the 12 individually presented concepts would be chosen for production and airing on RTE in October.

The brief
Encourage the ‘Unconverted’ to come and see ‘their own’ art collection.

My Response
“Discover yourself in every piece.”

TV
Art is how you perceive and behold it, discover yourself in every piece.  The TV ad will convey a sense of deep wonderment and marvel and will consist of close-up shots of various faces shot in strong slow-motion.  These people represent the assortment of styles, characteristics and personalities that make up the collection, artists and in turn, Ireland.

The ad will open on a close-up of a young girl, (mid-twenties natural and pretty), looking quizzical, curious and with deep intent into the camera.

Suddenly the camera flicks between shots of various others, a cross-section of varying ages, shapes and sizes…all holding the same deep gaze,  curiosity and head movements.  These people represent the assortment of styles , characteristics and personalities that make up the collection, artists and in turn Ireland.

We land back on the opening girl…suddenly her face sparks up, the perplexity is lost in a wave of satisfaction and enlightenment, she suddenly finds whatever it is she has been looking for.

The camera cuts to a shot from behind the girl… we can now see that she is standing looking at a large framed picture hanging on the gallery wall.  However, due to the angle of the camera and the reflection of the light all we, the viewer, can see, is the girl’s own reflection in the painting.
We see her looking momentarily and fully at her own reflection, she gives a ‘knowing,’ content and satisfied smile as if to her herself and then walks off camera.

The Camera pans back and up to show a wide shot of the IMMA gallery with the voicover:
“Discover yourself in every piece.
The Moderns Exhibition, now showing at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin”

Guerilla
For guerilla marketing I propose that we place large frames around various cities and places in Ireland, eg. the Famine memorial statues, O’Connell Street, the GPO,  framing real life scenes, architecture, people and places around Ireland, places that either feature in the Moderns exhibition themselves or else represent a milestone in Ireland’s recent history, and thus have helped shape Ireland into what it is today.

We can place large carboard plackards beside the frames and on the sides of buildingd, signifying that you, us, Ireland is the subject matter.

People can interact, take photographs of, and become part of the scene itself…

Digital – Stickybits
Stickybits is a “fun and social way to attach digital content to real world objects” via a mobile app for iphone or android…and is an excellent way to join and share the conversation.  I propose to add barcodes beside the frame installations around Dublin and to specific pieces in the exhibition itself.

For example, beside Mainie Jellet’s ‘Virgin of Fire’ painting, we can add a sticker which, when scanned by a visitors phone, will lead them to a page showing all comments links and photographs that other people have added in relation to that painting.

ICAD Upstarts programme 2010 – I’m in!

I am delighted to be accepted on the 2010 ICAD Upstarts Programme.

The Upstarts programme consists of 6 weekly workshops hosted by a top Dublin advertising agency each week. A different brief is given each week that the 12 successful candidates must complete and present their response to gaining invaluable experience along the way.

The application process involved the submission of a response to brief, in a nutshell:

“Devise an advertising campaign for a range of eco coffins through a press campaign plus demonstrate how your idea might work online, in digital or ambient.”

You can download the full brief and more details about the programme here.

My response, and successful entry, in summary is as follows:

Highlights from OFFF Paris 2010

I was very happy to be attending my second year of the OFFF festival, this time in Paris.  Here are my top 5 highlights in reverse order:

Craig Ward
I had never heard of Craig Ward before and very nearly missed his talk, however his presentation was one of refreshment & inspiration. I felt the same way I felt upon hearing Brendan Dawes speak for the first time in 2007..like I had uncovered a hidden gem.

The most notable pieces of work from Craig Ward are undoubtedly his handmade letterpress pieces of typography which took up most of his early career, and his experimentations with type including his custom font made of hair…

Wooster Collective
The ‘Wooster Collective‘ was founded in 2001 and is dedicated to showcasing and celebrating ephemeral art placed on streets in cities around the world.

The most interesting pieces for me where ‘Guerilla’ embroidery, knitting & gardening respectively.
Guerilla embroidery
These ‘acts of public embroidery‘ where committed by Swedesh artist ‘Ulrika Erdes‘ on bus & train seats throughout Sweden.  She encourages recruits across the world and will even post you a free embroidery kit to help you get started!

Guerilla knitting

Guerilla knitting: the world’s most inoffensive graffiti.

Above Right; A tagged guard chain in Stockholm, by the prolific ‘maskerade‘ crew.

Cyclize your City exhibition now on

Cyclize your City exhibitionIf you happen to be around the area of Christchurch this week, or perhaps more realistically, Leo Burdocks, then be sure to pop into ‘Gallery Number One‘ to check out my submission in the latest exhibition.

The ‘Cyclize your City‘ design competition ran as part of this years bike week.  And although my entry; ‘Belfast’s New Wheels‘ successfully made it to the final exhibition it didn’t quite clinche the winning prize money (despite my ‘Free Kiss or Pint for every Vote’ promotion :)

A vote for Lynsey is a vote for you :)
