Week two was held at IIBBDO in Sandymount, with a brief from the Road Safety Authority. A slightly more relaxed evironment than week 1 with sweets and drinks on offer.
Over the last 10 years the RSA has helped make Irish roads significantly safer, with road deaths reduced by 41% since 2001. But one group of road users has proved continuously difficult to reach, with awful consequences – young male drivers.
The brief
Convince young men to drive with more care through any means neccessary.
My response
- Proposal 1
“We passed this way…”
I propose to bring the message to our target audience right when, and where they need it most… on the roads. Attach a face, name and empathy to the young victims of road accidents over the past 5 years and turn statistics into stories.
Print / Outdoor
I propose to put a poster of the face and name of every young victim in the exact area they lost their life. For example you might see at a petrol station or tunnel entrance…
…with the aim to make drivers aware and curious of the roads that they drive on…somebody lost their life here, why?
Guerilla
I propose to strengthen this campaign with guerilla marketing techniques again highlighting the places and frequency of deaths that have taken place on the roads.
- Proposal 2
“Have you seen our new speed cameras?!”
Results of a focus group determined that ‘speeding fines’ where the number one deterrent of careless driving, for that reason my second proposal is to invest half of the budget on the installation of additional fixed speeding cameras throughout problem areas in Ireland, with the other half of the budget invested in an outdoor and print advertising campaign ‘launching’ these new cameras.
Presenting these new cameras as if introducing a new state of the art Sony product will help relate to our target audience with a tongue-in-cheek yet serious tone.
Our aim is not to catch drivers out but to encourage them, through any means necessary, to drive with more care.
